Tumbler Ridge’s emergency department is closed for its regular hours and on-call service today, Tuesday, Feb. 3, “due to staffing challenges.”
Only the emergency departent is being closed. Northern Health said in a notice to residents that primary care appointments should still visit the Tumbler Ridge Health Centre.
On a typical day, the clinic’s emergency room is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with on-call coverage for an hour before opening in the morning and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. After-hour emergency cases are transported to a nearby hospital.
“Emergency department status may change abruptly,” the health authority said. Last month, Northern Health launched its website where northern B.C. residents can check if the ER is open.
“Service interruptions are temporary and necessary for patient safety,” reads the explanation on that site.
People experiencing urgent medical crises – including chest pains, trouble breathing, and broken bones – should call 9-1-1 to be transported for medical intervention.
Non-urgent issues can be managed via primary care practitioners, who are still working as normal in the community, or through an appointment with the Northern Health virtual clinic, the healthcare provider explained.
“Patients who aren’t sure whether their condition would warrant an emergency room visit, or who need health advice can call HealthLink B.C. (8-1-1),” it continued. This service provides residents with access to professionals, such as nurses and pharmacists, 24/7.
