The Peace River Regional District meeting scheduled for today, Thursday, Feb. 12, has been cancelled in light of the tragedies in Tumbler Ridge.
“This (cancellation) is to allow our communities time and opportunity to grieve following the tragedy in Tumbler Ridge,” said the PRRD — who intend on resuming their usual activities later this month at their next scheduled meeting on Feb. 26.
“The district of Tumbler Ridge is part of our regional family and this tragedy is felt deeply across the entire Peace region. Our hearts go out to the children, staff, family, community, Mayor Darryl Krakowka, council and every resident of Tumbler Ridge as they navigate this incredibly difficult time. We grieve alongside you,” said vice board chair Leonard Hiebert.
Flags in front of the districts offices across the Peace, including their headquarters in Dawson Creek, will fly at half mast “in memorial.”
“The PRRD is committed to supporting Tumbler Ridge through this tragedy and recovery. We encourage residents across the region to look after one another and to reach out for support when it is needed. To the residents of Tumbler Ridge — the region is here with you,” said Hiebert.
Today, Feb. 12, will also mark a day of mourning for those impacted by the shootings at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, and the nearby residence, in the province.
“(Tumbler Ridge is) a community that’s clearly in shock. The full extent of what has happened is not sunk in, and they’re gonna be some long days, weeks, some months ahead,” said B.C. Premier David Eby.
He spoke with reporters in front of the local Town Hall on Wednesday — a day after these incidents rocked the Peace region and the nation.
