A vigil is scheduled in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., tonight after Tuesday’s tragedy.
The District of Tumbler Ridge said the event will begin at dusk on Friday, Feb. 13. Dusk is expected to be around 6 p.m., and the office of Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduling his appearance for 6:15 p.m.
“As our community continues to support one another in grief, the district is inviting residents to gather for a public community vigil,” the district wrote in a post inviting “all members of the public” to attend. The gathering will be on the front steps of the local Town Hall.
“This vigil will provide a space to come together, reflect and honour all those affected by this week’s tragedy.”
In addition to Carney, other federal representatives – including the leader of the Official Opposition Pierre Poilievre, Elizabeth May, the leader of the Green Party, the leader of the Bloc Quebecois, Yves-Francois Blanchet, and the NDP’s interim leader, Don Davies, were also asked to be present.
Provincial leaders, including Premier David Eby, who arrived in the community on Wednesday, are also expected tonight. Eby will be joined by the Lisa Beare, the Minister of Education and Childcare, as well as the Minister of Health, Josie Osborne.
Memorials are already popping up in the south Peace community, including by the community centre – where flowers, teddy bears, and cards sit.
