Threat to Chetwynd Secondary School ‘unfounded,’ say local police

After investigating an anonymous message about “ignored reports of a student attending school with a knife” in Chetwynd, B.C., Mounties said they found the alleged threat “to be unfounded.”

“We recognize the fear and concern that such reports might cause in light of recent events. With that in mind, we wanted to address the misinformation within the community and online by letting everyone know that the school is safe,” said Cpl. Marika Masters of the community’s RCMP.

Chetwynd RCMP said the investigation began after an anonymous email containing a threat directed at the local secondary school was forwarded to police last Friday, Mar. 6.

“An anonymous email detailed vague and unsubstantiated claims of ignored reports of a student attending school with a knife,” said the RCMP who say their investigations found “no evidence to support the anonymous claims.”

Police said the message followed an incident involving a group of students who became violent “several months” ago. Officers reassured parents that their work with schools to ensure student safety is ongoing.
