Emergency Preparedness Week: Dawson Creek urges residents to get ready

Emergency Preparedness Week is underway, running from May 3-9, and Dawson Creek residents are encouraged to take simple steps now to keep themselves, their families and their community safe during an emergency.

The national campaign highlights the importance of being ready for unexpected events such as floods, fires, hazardous spills and poor air quality. Preparing in advance can reduce risk and help people respond more quickly and safely.

In Dawson Creek, preparedness is especially important due to local risks identified in the city’s hazard, risk and vulnerability assessment. These include flooding, structural fires, water scarcity, air quality concerns and hazardous material incidents.

Residents are encouraged to take several key actions:

Build an emergency kit
Have a home emergency kit and a grab-and-go bag ready in case you need to leave quickly or shelter in place.

Subscribe to emergency news
Residents who subscribe to the city’s emergency news page during Emergency Preparedness Week will be entered to win a four-person emergency preparedness kit. The page is the city’s primary source for emergency updates.

Sign up for emergency alerts
Register for NEBC Alerts to receive real-time emergency information for the region.

Register on the B.C. Services app
Creating an account in advance can help if you are displaced during an emergency, allowing the province to provide support more quickly.

Become an ESS volunteer
Emergency Support Services volunteers assist residents during emergencies. The city is currently recruiting.

“Emergency preparedness is something everyone can do, and small steps can make a big difference,” said Chelsea Mottishaw, Tourism, Emergency and Climate Readiness Manager. “By taking time now to prepare, residents can help protect themselves and support our community when it matters most.”
