The City of Dawson Creek says several municipal services will be temporarily relocated this summer as planned asbestos abatement work gets underway inside City Hall.
The city says the work is being carried out under direction from WorkSafeBC following concerns raised during a recent inspection connected to a City Hall project. Follow-up testing later confirmed limited asbestos contamination in the space between the roof and ceiling.
The affected area has not been disturbed and that City Hall remains safe for both staff and the public while preparations for the project continue.
The abatement work must be completed within the year and will be handled by qualified professionals using strict containment and safety procedures. Once that work is finished, the city says it will move ahead with electrical and IT upgrades aimed at improving long-term operations at the building.
To keep services running during the project, the city will shift departments in phases over the coming months.
Recreation Services, along with Culture & Recreation and Emergency Management, will move into the Kin Arena meeting room starting June 22.
Core City Hall departments, including finance, development services and administration, will relocate to space inside the Dawson Creek Mall beginning July 20.
Council meetings will also temporarily move to the Peace River Regional District boardroom starting July 27, with the final meeting at City Hall scheduled for July 13.
Despite the moves, the city says all services will continue to be available, including permits, taxation, utility payments and business licensing.
Funding for the project is included in the 2026 capital budget and is not expected to impact property taxes. The city says it expects staff and services to return to City Hall in early 2027.
