The Kenn Borek Aquatic Centre and Climbing Wall will close for more than a month this fall as crews carry out annual maintenance and infrastructure work.
The facility will be closed from Aug. 29 to Oct. 2, with reopening scheduled for Oct. 3.
The annual shutdown gives staff and contractors an opportunity to complete work that requires the pools to be emptied and the facility temporarily taken out of service.
This year’s main capital project will focus on the steam room.
Work will include:
- Removing and replacing the steam room tile.
- Inspecting the walls underneath and completing any repairs needed.
- Replacing the steam generator.
- Replacing the venting system connected to the exterior of the building.
- Replacing the water softener used by the steam generator.
Crews will also tackle a number of preventative maintenance and infrastructure projects throughout the facility.
That work includes electrical repairs and lighting upgrades, new hot tub lights, replacement of skimmer grates and plumbing repairs.
Several pumps and pump pads will also be replaced or rebuilt, while pool basins and deck surfaces will undergo their annual acid scrubbing.
Staff will replace chemical feed lines and injectors, inspect and clean the lap pool surge tank and maintain the facility’s sand filtration systems.
Rust mitigation and painting will also be completed throughout the aquatic centre.
The work is intended to help maintain the facility’s safety and reliability while preventing larger and potentially more costly repairs and longer closures in the future.
Kenn Borek Aquatic Centre staff and the maintenance team will work alongside contractors throughout the shutdown.
Staff will also take on cleaning, painting and other repairs to get the facility ready to reopen.
The city said it recognizes the aquatic centre and Climbing Wall are important community facilities and thanked residents for their patience while the work is completed.
