Fort St. John council bids farewell to Mayor Lilia Hansen, Councillor Byron Stewart

Fort St. John city council waved goodbye to Mayor Lilia Hansen and Councillor Byron Stewart at Monday’s council meeting, marking the end of their time in council chambers.

Hansen served as mayor for the past four years, while Stewart spent 15 years on council, contributing to decisions and initiatives that helped shape the community.

In a farewell message, the city thanked both for their commitment to Fort St. John and the time they dedicated to serving residents.

During her time as mayor, Hansen was part of several projects and investments aimed at supporting the city’s future, including the new RCMP detachment, improvements at Kin Park and Surerus Park and work toward a 115-unit independent living development on the former hospital site.

The city also highlighted investments in infrastructure, including the 106 Street Water Reservoir Replacement Project, as well as support for North Peace Search and Rescue.

The farewell message noted that those accomplishments were made possible through the work of council, city staff, community partners, volunteers and residents.

Stewart, meanwhile, was recognized for his 15 years of service and his longstanding support for the community. He was a strong advocate for the new aquatics facility and fieldhouse from the beginning.

Following last week’s referendum, which saw residents give the project a clear mandate, the city expressed hope that Stewart will be able to celebrate when the facility eventually opens.

As part of his farewell, Stewart chose to dedicate his gift to the Fort St. John Hospital Foundation’s Cancer Diagnostic and Treatment Fund. The cause is meaningful to him because cancer has affected people close to him, including family and friends.

The city said the donation reflects Stewart’s continued commitment to supporting the community he has served for a decade and a half.

With Hansen and Stewart stepping away from their roles, a new council and mayor will be sworn in on Nov. 2, beginning the next chapter of municipal leadership in Fort St. John.

The city thanked both for their service and contributions, noting that their work will remain part of the community’s story.
