PETRONAS completes $500,000 commitment to North Peace community fund

A $500,000 commitment from PETRONAS Canada to support communities across the North Peace and Northern Rockies has been fulfilled, with the funding expected to continue benefiting local organizations for generations.

The North Peace Community Foundation (NPCF) announced the milestone, marking the completion of a commitment first made in 2022 to the PETRONAS Sustainable Community Fund.

The fund was established as an endowment, meaning the money is invested to generate ongoing returns that can be used to support community initiatives over the long term.

It currently generates about $25,000 in annual grants for local charities and non-profit organizations, with that amount expected to grow as the endowment generates returns and expands its capacity.

Funding is distributed through the foundation’s Strong Roots Granting Program, which is accepting applications until Oct. 31, 2026.

Tracey Wolsey, chair of the NPCF board of directors, said the completed commitment reflects a shared investment in the region’s future.

“The PETRONAS Sustainable Community Fund creates a lasting legacy by ensuring that local charities and non-profit organizations have access to resources that will support meaningful projects for years to come,” Wolsey said.

She added that the partnership shows what industry and community organizations can accomplish when they work together with a long-term vision.

PETRONAS Canada is a founding member of the North Peace Community Foundation. The company says its contribution is intended to create a lasting source of funding for community priorities, both now and in the future.

“At PETRONAS Canada, we believe strong communities are built through long-term partnerships and investments that create lasting impact,” said Shannon Young, the company’s general counsel and vice-president of external affairs.

Young said the endowment model allows funding to address current community needs while preserving support for future generations.

The North Peace Community Foundation continues to build its endowment funds through contributions from industry partners, businesses, families and individual donors.

The foundation says those investments help ensure local resources remain available to address emerging needs and opportunities throughout the region.

Applications for the Strong Roots Granting Program can be submitted until Oct. 31, 2026.
